Avenue for budding film makers to showcase talents

SHAH ALAM, 18 August 2011 – In conjunction with Malaysia Day, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (“DiGi”) is playing its part to celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of Malaysian culture through DiGi MyPhone Shorties competition. In collaboration with the Media Prima Group, the competition provides an avenue for people to create their own Public Service Announcements (“PSA”) using the movie-making feature on smartphones.

Working around the theme, “Terima Kasih, Malaysia”, contestants are tasked to create a 30-second video on what they love about Malaysia. Divided into two categories, the University Students category runs from 15 August to 6 September. The top five winning entries of this category will be aired on national television leading up to Malaysia Day on 16 September.

Two-day intensive workshops were held to provide guidance and tips for budding film makers on how to present their cinematic perspectives with smartphones. Over 300 students participated and they were mentored by professionals from the Media Prima Group. Snippets from the workshops will be showed on TV3’s Malaysia Hari Ini, ntv7’s The Breakfast Show and 8TV Quickie.

The Public category, running from 17 August to 15 October, will carry the same theme using only smartphones to produce their PSA. While there is no time limit for the PSA video clips produced by the public, they will be required to submit a 3-minute behind-the-scenes video clip as proof of the method used to create their entries. The top two winners in this category will be announced in early November 2011.

Albern Murty, Head of Marketing, said: “This initiative is DiGi’s way to promote and celebrate the 1Malaysia spirit in conjunction with Malaysia Day. We wanted to create a familiar avenue for the younger generation to express their views on what makes Malaysia so different and dynamic. So, we incorporated something into the initiative that is familiar to them – recording people and moments that they treasure with their mobile phones. In this case, contestants are challenged to produce PSAs that showcase the rich cultural environment Malaysia has to offer.

“MyPhone Shorties is an opportunity for anyone to show others what make Malaysians special as well as their storytelling skills on video. With the help of Media Prima, these talented film makers will have a chance to see their videos shown nationwide.”

Both categories will be evaluated by a panel of professionals in the broadcast industry (60%) and by public voting (40%). More details of the competition can be found on www.terimakasihmalaysia.com.my/myshorties
