We've all heard the adage “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Sounds like good advice, but not everybody takes it. Some people quietly resign themselves to a life of lemons. Why is this? One reason may be “learned helplessness”, a term coined by researcher Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania.

Teaching your child tolerance makes moral sense, as well as economic sense. In this era of rapid globalization, it is likely that your child will grow up to interact and do business with people from vastly different cultures from different corners of the world. Helping children adapt to different peoples and cultures with genuine respect and comfort will likely expand their opportunities and success in life. Tolerance is not simply “tolerating” differences among people, but refers to a broad respect and appreciation.

Establishing Rules for Your Children

Setting rules for your children is a fundamental part of discipline. Honestly, you have no right to discipline, or punish a child for doing something that you never made clear was wrong. That's just not fair.

Shotgun discipline builds resentment in your children. Establish rules. Make sure that your kids know the rules, and make sure they know exactly what the consequences will be if they break the rules.

Anger isn't always bad - 5 ways that anger is good!

Experience with anger may leave you with the idea that all  anger is bad. Yelling at your children for cooperation doesn't leave you feeling very positively. Watching your children fight when they are angry doesn't give you any warm feelings either. But, anger does have its purpose in our lives and can teach us a thing or two about how to have healthier, happier relationships.
