Thousands participate in charity run in support of patients with Acute Kidney Diseases ~
 
Putrajaya, 28 April 2013 – More than 4,000 people which included the general public, kidney patients and their family members participated in the recent World Kidney Day Run and Carnival 2013’ at Dataran Putrajaya. The event, held in conjunction with World Kidney Day 2013, was jointly organized by the Malaysian Society of Nephrology (MSN) and National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) in collaboration with the Medical Development Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia.

When Your Child is Allergic to Milk...

Do you know the difference between CMPA (cow’s milk protein allergy) and lactose intolerance? Don’t feel bad if you don’t because you are among the 67.2% of parents who are either unsure or do not know the difference. Only 32.8% of about 350 parents in Malaysia who participated in a recent survey were sure that they knew the difference.

A 3-month-old baby died just 50 hours after being admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of a Malaysian hospital. The cause of death? Invasive meningococcal disease or IMD. When I was a little girl, my mum used to play a Chinese song by a famous lady singer on our old record player. She told me that the Taiwanese songstress had died of a brain infection. Today I can neither recall the name of the singer nor the song, but I remember the name of the deceased’s affliction – meningitis. What is meningitis?

Experts launch Cow's Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) Awareness Campaign

In conjunction with World Allergy Week 2013 (8-14 April), the Malaysian Paediatric Association (MPA) and the Malaysian Society of Allergy and Immunology (MSAI) today launched a Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) Awareness Campaign to help raise awareness and educate parents about CMPA amongst children. CMPA is the most common form of food allergy in infants.

Young Malaysians Speak Up Against Smoking

Kuala Lumpur, 13 December 2012 – Young Malaysians have created a new wave of voices against smoking in the recently concluded “Unlike Cigarette” contest organised by National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) and Courts Malaysia.

Youths aged 13-24 were invited to share their views on why smoking was not cool and among the reasons cited in their creative video entries were aesthetic factors such as stained teeth and bad breath to more serious consequences such as cancer and harming loved ones with second hand smoke.

Algal DHA Dietary Supplementation shows Improvement in Reading Progress and Behaviour

Increased dietary intake of algal DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in school-aged children with low reading levels demonstrated significant improvements in reading performance and behaviour, according to a new clinical study conducted at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Lead researchers of the study indicated that DHA supplementation appears to be an effective way to improve reading in healthy but underperforming children from mainstream schools.

“It’s called non-neurogenic, neurogenic bladder!” I was trying to explain to a friend who had enquired about my daughter’s medical condition. It is a rather rare condition, whereby her inability to empty her bladder, when required, and to empty it completely is not caused by any defective nerves.
