"My mum was a firm parent who required obedience and respect above all else. She was always a parent, not a friend until I was much older. I never confided in my mother. I would have died rather than telling her about the latest boy I had a crush on, or how badly I was coping in my schoolwork. But the funny thing is I never for a moment wished for a different mother.
